The point is...you DON'T have to watch commercials in these modern times. We use the DVR to record all our favorite programs and watch them later that night or the following evening. We fast forward through all the commercials, and since the shows have less interruptions we enjoy them more. And we're not tempted by the enticing food commercials to break our diet. DVR's are optional equipment with most cable television companies or you can purchase a DVR separately in most electronic equipment stores. We started doing this because we disliked how commercials destroy the continuity of the shows we're watching. Then, we discovered the bonus when it also helped us resist all the food commercials.


2. Use Your PC
We use this in conjunction with the DVR. We get home from work, have a healthful dinner, and then watch the network evening news we just recorded. After that, we check the TV menu for what's on that night, set the DVR to record the 2 programs we want to save, and watch last night's recordings. Then, we go to our PC's. If you're like us, you can spend many, many hours on the PC and you're amazed how fast the time goes by. We check and write emails, get on Facebook, Twitter or YouTube, read & comment on messages from our friends, and pay bills with online banking. Sometimes we'll do some research about a favorite subject, an advance purchase or future travel plans. I check my online weight loss business and do a few tweaks. When we finish, it's time to go to bed. She's been on her laptop, me on the desktop and we've both been too totally absorbed in our online activities to be hungry. But now, it's been 4-5 hours since dinner. Do we go to bed hungry or do we eat something?


3. Don't Starve Yourself
I'm a Type 2 diabetic and I learned this in the hospital after an operation. They gave me peanut butter crackers every night to keep my blood sugar up until morning & I've used that diabetic snack method ever since. As an alternative, after the PC, if I'm really hungry, I'll have a PB & J sandwich which has almost the same amount of calories (using 50 calorie, double-fiber bread slices & diet jam). I'll wash it down with low sodium V8 juice. I'm getting fruit, protein, fiber, and vegetables in that one low calorie snack. My wife likes to have a bowl of Raisin Bran with skim milk. The point is, to stay on a diet, don't starve yourself. Spaced halfway between dinner and breakfast, a snack of high fiber, low sugar and low calories is a very good thing.


4. Get More Sleep
We used to stay up until midnight which gave us 6 hours of sleep. As we get older, we need more rest so if we finish at 9:30-10 PM, we go to bed. We read and also use the time to talk to each other. Reading makes us sleepy which helps us get a long restful night. We've found that getting enough sleep is very important to our health - and in maintaining our diet.
